AI Literacy Training: Understand, Evaluate and Apply
AI literacy training develops the knowledge and judgement needed to engage with AI thoughtfully. It goes beyond learning commands for a particular tool. This guide outlines practical capabilities to look for in foundational learning and questions that help you assess your own understanding.
Understand what a system can and cannot do
Build a working understanding of AI concepts, including the difference between generating a plausible response and verifying a fact. Learn to recognise that performance varies by task, available information and context.
A useful learning goal is being able to explain a tool's role and limitations in plain language, including when it should not be relied upon.
Evaluate outputs and supporting evidence
Practise checking claims, comparing sources and identifying missing assumptions. Consider whether the evidence supports the conclusion and whether an output represents people or situations fairly.
To test understanding, review a sample response and explain which parts you would verify, what sources you would use and what uncertainty would remain. The explanation matters as much as spotting an error.
Connect responsible use with everyday decisions
Foundational learning should address privacy, information security, appropriate disclosure and human oversight. Apply these ideas to the permissions, policies and responsibilities of your own setting rather than assuming one rule fits every workplace.
A practical exercise might ask you to choose suitable input information, identify a review point and explain who remains responsible for the final action.
Choose learning with defined objectives
IAIDL is CEAI's learning and certification pathway for practical AI knowledge and responsible professional use. Compare its published information with the capabilities you want to develop, then confirm current arrangements with CEAI.
AI literacy training can support informed practice, but attending training alone does not establish legal compliance or automatically fulfil certification requirements. Ask how learning is assessed and what evidence you will be expected to provide.
